Child Care Licensing Rules require that any child care staff who administer medication shall have received training approved by DFS on the administration of medication. DFS has developed a 2 hour Medication Administration Training to meet this requirement. Individuals who take this course are only required to take it one time. The course does not have to be repeated during each training biennium. There are many concerns and questions regarding activated charcoal and syrup of ipecac. The use of activated charcoal is covered in all medication administration training. Activated charcoal is used in an emergency situation to absorb poison that a child has swallowed. Activated charcoal does not have to be in a specific form. Providers can work with their local pharmacists in obtaining it in a form that can be given to children if necessary.
