What is Medicare Part D?
Medicare Part D began in 2006, and this plan provides optional out-patient prescription drug coverage. The beneficiary will choose an offered drug plan, and the Part D plan will provide assistance for the financial cost of drugs included in their plan. The plan must be one provided in the beneficiary’s geographic area. The plans will vary as to the premiums, deductibles, co-payment amounts, prescription medications covered and other cost sharing. If a beneficiary has low income and assets, then this beneficiary may qualify for additional help under Medicare Part D.
