What is medical sociology?

pohnpei397 Teacher Community / Jr. College eNotes Editor Sociology is the study of the structure and functioning of society and how those things affect the well-being of individuals in the society. Given this definition, it follows that medical sociology is the study of the relationship between society and the health of its individual members. Medical sociology studies such questions as: • How does a person’s place in society (his or her race, sex, income level, etcetera) affect his or her access to health care? • How do the above factors affect the quality of health care an individual receives • What types of people generally engage in behaviors that are detrimental to their health This list is by no means comprehensive. I’m sorry, but I don’t know the exact meaning of “brief notes.” I hope this is helpful. Medical sociology is the study of individual and group behaviors with respect to health and illness. Thus “medical” is a little simplistic, as the focus is not only on medical professionals or their behaviours, but also focuses on human behavioural responses to health and illness. Medical sociology is concerned with individual and group responses aimed at assessing well-being, maintaining health, acting upon real or perceived illness, interacting with health care systems, and maximising health in the face of physiologic or functional derangement. It also analyses the impact of the psychological conditions resulting from our environment on our health. It also studies the differet roles created in such situations like the “sick role”.
