Medicaid is a joint federal and state program, and Medicaid provides payment for medical care for persons unable to afford the medical services. The Medicaid program operates as a partnership between the federal government and the state government. Unlike Medicare, Medicaid is a means-tested program meaning the beneficiary has to qualify for Medicaid with financial and medical qualifications. Medicaid will cover the expenses of long-term care in a nursing home, physician’s services, hospital care and supplies and other necessary services for the beneficiary. Medicaid is often used to pay for services after the Medicare 100 day limitation has expired. Medicaid is administered independently by each state, and each state fall under the federal laws creating the Medicaid program. So the basic eligibility standards can be similar, but there can also be significant differences between states in qualifying for Medicaid. As a result, Medicaid is considered to be one of the most complex laws du

Medicaid pays for medical care and services for low-income families and individuals. Services include but are not limited to physicians and hospital care, dental care, home care, institutional care, prescription drugs, equipment and supplies. Individuals that receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Public Assistance are automatically eligible. Medicaid is a state administered program and each state sets its own guidelines regarding eligibility and services. Medicaid is a government-sponsored medical and health program. Medicaid will pay for long term care whether within your own home or in a nursing home, if you have problems with daily living activities. There are strict eligibility requirements, and the benefits are only available to those with extremely limited financial resources. In 2009, the resource limit (which includes assets of all kinds including checking, savings accounts, C.D’s and IRA’s) for individuals is $13,800 and $20,100 for couples. The monthly income level allowed is $767 for individuals and $1,117 for couples. However, those who plan properly may be able to receive Medicaid and still preserve their assets. Even those who own their own home are not necessarily disqualified from receiving benefits, with proper planning.
