What is media path optimization/media release, and why is it important?
Media path optimization/media release is a way for a VoIP service delivery platform to instruct external endpoints of a call set up through it to pass media directly amongst themselves instead of continuing to remain in the path of that media. Of course, the VoIP platform can pivot the media path and re-insert itself into it if it is required to provide a feature (music on hold, recording, channel barging, call transfer, etc.). The platform can also remain in the signaling path continuously, so this does not prevent accounting or fundamental call control from taking place.
