What is meant when people refer to locked or unlocked cell phones?
Cell phones are “locked” to a certain provider. In other words, a device purchased from AT&T cannot be used by a T-Mobile customer. There are a few ways to unlock them. The kosher way is to ask your provider to do it for you. I don’t know the other carrier’s rules, but I know AT&T will do it for you once you have been with them 90 days. It is pretty much just a phone call if you do it that way. I did this with my phone before traveling overseas, just in case I decided to rent a SIM while I was there. The other way is to unlock it from the device itself by modifying the software. This requires a little know how, or at least a lot of research. If you “unlock” a device by modifying the software you can do much more than free it up to be used on other networks. Most cell phones have pre-loaded (came with it) content that you cannot erase.
