What is meant when it is said that the plan is also aimed at curbing involuntary bussing?
Involuntary bussing occurs when children are transported to schools the parents have not requested because there is not sufficient space in the neighborhood school. The NSI project groups found that many MPS parents have been denied their first choice of school because they found that their neighborhood school was full when they went to register their child in late spring or fall. They were then forced to have their children bussed out of the neighborhood to schools in other attendance areas. With more seats in neighborhood schools, fewer children will be forced to be bussed.
