Interpreting for deaf or hard of hearing students consists of three basic forms; transliteration, interpretation and oral translation. • Transliteration is the process of working between spoken English and a signed form of English. • Interpretation is the process of working between spoken English and American Sign Language. • Oral translation is the process of working with spoken English and lip-reading through a silent form of English that is more visible on the lips. While these terms reflect different forms of “interpretation,” for the purpose of this Information Update, the term interpreting is used to encompass all three. • Real-time captioning (RTC) is another option for students in accessing their education. A real-time captioner is someone who has completed training similar to a court room reporter who records the classroom conversation which is then transmitted onto a computer screen for the student to read.
