What is meant by the terms “Complex” and “Simple” design PPE?
The PPE Directive divides products into one of three categories depending on the types of hazard that they are intended to protect against. Products protecting against low level hazards such as gardening gloves where the effects are gradual and the user can safely identify them in good time are categorised as ‘Simple Design’. These products are self certified by the manufacturer. Products protecting against mortal danger are termed ‘Complex Design Products’ and are listed in the Directive. These products require both type examination and assessment against Article 11 of the Directive by a European Notified Body. All other products fall in a middle category often referred to as ‘Intermediate Design’ or ‘Cat 2’. These require Type Examination by a Notified Body but are not subject to ongoing conformity Article 11 procedures.
