This is the vertical distance in millimeters, or a decimal fraction of a millimeter, from the front of the objective to the cover glass or uncovered specimen, when the specimen is in focus. High magnification objectives customarily have very short working distances. The manufacturer should be able to supply you with working distance data for each objective.
