What is meant by spring and neap tide?

0

Spring tides have absolutely nothing to do with “Spring” All tides are governed by the phases of the moon. Spring tides occur at New Moon and full Moon. They are tides which have a large range of difference between Low water and High Water, in other words the water is deeper in harbours etc. Neap tides occur at first and last quarter stages of the moon and have a low tidal volume. So, in real terms each occurs once every 14 days or twice a month. The moon causes tides by its gravitational pull and Spring tides happen when the sun and moon join forces ie are in line with each other.
