What is Meant by Shaft Flex?
There are essentially five different shaft flexes, namely Ladies or Light (L); Amateur or Seniors (A); Regular (R); Stiff (S); and Extra Stiff (X). What is particularly interesting, is that there is no definite standard between suppliers – what is an S flex for one manufacturer can be an A flex for another. The true flex, measured in cycles per minute, can only be found through the utilization of a frequency analyzer since individual shaft frequencies often vary substantially. (It is not uncommon for a frequency matched set of graphite irons to require the measurement of up to 20 shafts to get 8 that are almost identical.) Shaft flexes are generally governed by the swing speed of the golfer and the tempo which measures the swing from the top of the swing through the ball. As a general rule, the slower the swing speed, the less stiff the flex. The shaft is considered by many to be the most part of the equipment. Every effort should be made to ensure that the shaft flex meets the individ
