What is meant by “extinction”?
Extinction is when a behavior or internal response “dies out” because the repeated pairings or contingencies cease. What is meant by “reduction of a learned response”? Reduction of a learned response can occur when a given contingency is removed. In practical terms, this means that a person who intrinsically values increased speech fluency would achieve longer-lasting fluency than the person who is only externally rewarded for increased speech fluency. Give an example of the role of generalization in stuttering. A client practices stuttering modification techniques in the therapy room with the clinician. Then he heads across the street after therapy to order food from Taco Johns, where the “old behavior” (first learned contingency) is to push through his blocks, without using any of the modifications he was just practicing moments ago. The old behavior has a stronger strength than the newer learned behavior. He has not yet generalized the techniques. Explain in your own words Van Riper
