Technically, exemption means that all the research activities fall under one or more of the exemption categories specified by the federal regulations. The criteria and processes for determining exemption from IRB review are outlined in the IRB SOP #2, Requirements for Submission of Research Protocols for a Determination by ORIA of Exemption from IRB Review. The significance of exempt status is that the research activity is not monitored by the IRB. Assuming the project does not change, it also is not subject to continuing IRB oversight.
