The term “Anglophone” refers to people who speak English as their mother tongue. This noun is most often used in Canada, when describing the English-speaking minority which lives in the predominantly French province of Quebec. In contrast to Anglophones, French-speaking Canadians are usually referred to as Francophones and those from immigrant families are often called “Allophones.” According to the latest census data, Anglophones comprise approximately 8.8 percent of Quebec’s population of nearly 7.8 million inhabitants. The vast majority of Anglophones live in Montreal, with smaller English communities as well in southern Quebec, close to the border between Canada and the United States. According to the most recent statistics, Anglophones comprise nearly 30 percent of Montreal’s population.
