The maximum parsimony method seeks the tree that minimizes the total number of substitutions required to explain the data. Maximum parsimony is the most commonly used method for constructing phylogenies, however; it has some well-known weaknesses. It is not a good method to use when evolutionary rates are highly unequal among lineages. The performance of maximum parsimony can be improved by weighting the data.
