What is mammogram?
A mammogram is a special type of x-ray of the breast. The breast is pressed between two plates and pictures are taken from different angles. Mammography has been proven in five worldwide research studies to be the most reliable method we have for detecting breast cancer when it is very small, 1-2 years before it can be felt. Mammograms can “see” small tumors before we can feel them. When should women get mammograms? The American Cancer Society (ACS) and the American Medial Association (AMA) both recommend that women begin getting annual mammograms starting at age 40. ACS began recommending annual exams in March of 1997 and the AMA began recommending annual exams June of 1999. NCI suggests that women aged 40 and over get mammograms every 1-2 years and women with an increased risk of developing breast cancer seek the advise of their health care provider.
