What is macrame and how do you make it?
Macrame started as a pastime for fisherman and sailors who had lots of cord and rope around and lots of time on their hands. They started using it to make nets to catch the fish and then they learned to make hammocks to sleep in and belts and bags and decorative hangings. I make macrame hangers for my plants. You can use twine, cord, string, yarn or leather lacing. You can decorate your project with large beads made of wood, plactic or glass. Interesting driftwood and sea shells are used also. If you are interested in learning it I would suggest getting a book from the library or a hobby shop and some twine or cord. First you must learn the knots that you use. Small projects are usually done on a board with a nail or hook at the top to hold the twine while you tie the knots. Most how-to books start with a simple wall hanging or plant hanger. I’ve seen huge (20 ft) wall hangings in office buildings that are visually stunning. There are belts, hatbands, women’s purses and men’s shoulder
