Lupus is a chronic auto immune disease. Chronic meaning it lasts longer than 6 weeks and auto immune meaning the immune system turns in upon itself and attacks healthy tissue. There is no known cause or cure. It tends mostly to affect women of child bearing age in the 15 to mid 40’s age group although it can affect men and children. Coloured women are 2 – 3 times more likely to develop the disease. In simple terms it causes confusion to the immune system to the degree that the immune sytem cannot identify healthy tissue from foreign invaders and infections. This results in the immune system producing autoantibodies which attack healthy tissue. It is not contagious or passed on through sexual contact. It is a mysterious illness which is difficult to diagnose. It is often mis-diagnosed because it can mimic other illnesses. Lupus early symptoms include aching or swollen joints, fever over 100 degrees, prolonged or extreme tiredness, anaemia, pleurisy, kidney involvement, skin rashes, sun
