What is Loy Krathong?
Loy Krathong is a traditional festival celebrated in Thailand on the full moon night of the Twelfth Lunar Month. “Loy” means “to float”. “Krathong” is a vessel traditionally made from a section of banana tree trunk (although modern-day versions often use Styrofoam), decorated with elaborately folded banana leaves, flowers, candles, incense, etc. Once the incense and candles are lit, one makes a wish as the Krathong is placed upon the water. It is a tradition that dates back hundreds of years in Thailand, and we welcome you to celebrate with us as we bring this popular festival to the Washington, D.C., area.
