What is low sulfur diesel?
Crude oil comes from all different parts of the world. You probably have heard of oil that is called “sweet crude”. This is oil that comes from the Saudi Arabia area and is naturally low in sulfur coming out of the oilwell. Sulfur is rather difficult to remove from oil and it has that distinct smell of “rotten eggs” when it is burnt, not to mention it forms sulfuric acid in the atmosphere and comes down as acid rain. A lot of crude oils from Alaska and Texas have higher amounts of sulfur in them. Most refineries take the sulfur out of the crude oil and actually sell the purified sulfur that is extracted. Diesel has had such a bad rap in the past about being so dirty that most refineries always take the sulfur out of all transportation fuels including gasoline.
