LNG has had a superb operating history and all these facilities have been operating without serious public safety incidents, some for over 40 years. The most serious LNG accident occurred more than sixty years ago (1944) in Cleveland, Ohio, when LNG storage was still an inexact science. Substandard materials used in the construction of an LNG storage tank failed and resulted in a spill of LNG that traveled into a sewer system, and spread through and adjacent neighborhood.
