What is life like in prison in England?

I served 34 years as a Prison Officer and Operational Manager, when i started it was the same as you described in Ireland. Thankfully we progressed to a more civilised regime and treated people with respect. Prisoners have access to showers, daily. They have TV in cells and the prisons are smartly decorated inside. In my experience this is a better way of dealing with people. Not all prisoners are uncooperative or violent. Most do their sentence without any attitude. Ignore the TV programmes i have not seen one which properly portray life in prison. You have all the facilities to help you improve your life, clearly a lot do not take advantage of them but many do. The problem prisoners were dealt with instantly but this is not just cause to deprive all prisoners from a decent safe environment and to be treated with respect.
