What is life like for Thai ladies?
Contrary to the belief of many, (they having a view formed from a holiday where they only interacted with the ‘tourist focused’ Thais) Thailand is a very conservative society. The vast majority of the population live with respect towards age and wealth, with the good name of their family being uppermost. When it comes to selecting a partner for marriage, it is still a family matter, with approval for contact being sought from parents and meetings being strictly chaperoened. A dowry (in Thai ‘sinsod’) is expected as recompence for taking a daughter from a household. These standards and values are slowly being eroded due to western influence amongst the young and by those of an unscrupulous character. It is not done to show emotion in public, (even holding hands is seem as negative to many) with any form of disrespect or criticism being unacceptable. Even talk of intimacy is to be avoided and left for behind closed doors.
