What is life like for South Africas learning generation?
On Wednesday 14 June 2006, hundreds of British schools were given the chance to share the school day with a school in Soweto, South Africa. We met the teachers and pupils, visited the classrooms, and found out everything there is to know about the school day in South Africa. Plus, 30 years since the Soweto uprising on 16 June 1976 when thousands of black students rebelled against apartheid, we found out how that defining day in South Africa’s history has affected the lives of those at school today. School Day: South Africa was shown throughout the day on BBC News 24 . Each time BBC News 24 visited the schools, it was streamed live at www.bbcnews.com/schoolday. Fergal Keane, the BBC’s former Africa Correspondent was in Soweto and BBC News 24’s Philippa Thomas was at Hesketh Fletcher CofE High School in Wigan in Greater Manchester. BBC World also took part in the special interactive event.
