What is Letchworth about?
I do believe that Letchworth is different from other towns. There is a belief here, from its creation, that the town doesn’t belong to the council or any other landlord but to the people themselves. That is why there is a tradition to call ourselves ‘citizens’. That dream is not dead. For my part and of the town council we believe in active participation in local democracy and active citizenship. I believe that is the role of the council to not just speak up for people but to give them a voice too. Our strategy has and will continue to be setting up neighbourhood groups and empowering them to change, control and shape their own neighbourhoods. So far we have supported the Jackmans Improvement Group and helped residents set up the Grange Improvement Forum. The first fruits of this could be seen in as the new community garden opened up at the centre of the Grange estate. I know that people there are proud of this achievement and we are proud to have supported them. I hope that we will be
