What is lansoprazole?
Lansoprazole is used for treating ulcers of the stomach and duodenum, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome. Lansoprazole is in a class of drugs called proton pump inhibitors (PPI) which block the production of acid by the stomach. This medication, like other proton-pump inhibitors, blocks the enzyme in the wall of the stomach that produces acid. By blocking the enzyme, the production of acid is decreased, and this allows the stomach and esophagus to heal. It is marketed under the following brand names: Takepron in Japan, Prevacid by TAP Pharmaceuticals in the U.S and Zoton.
Follow your physician’s instructions carefully. Lansoprazole is usually taken once or twice a day before a meal. The capsule can be opened and the pellets sprinkled on a tablespoon of applesauce or similar food. Keep all medications away from children. Never share your medications with anyone else.
