What is laminectomy for spinal tumor excision?
A surgical procedure in which the lamina (i.e. a part of the vertebra) is partly or completed removed, to relieve pressure on the spinal nerve by creating more space. The procedure is conducted for the removal of tumors (both extradural and intradural). The tumors can be due to metastasis of the primary cancer elsewhere, or may arise in the spinal cord itself. Surgical intervention is recommended in patients that have failed to respond to non surgical treatment like chemotherapy or radiation therapy. More than 75% of the patients with intradural cancer improve with the surgery while the percentage of improvement in patients with extradural cancer is less than 40%. The procedure is highly complicated and requires technical and medical expertise to execute successfully.
