What is LADA?
LADA or latent autoimmune diabetes in adults is a form of type 1 diabetes as it is a condition in which the body attacks its own insulin producing cells. LADA is often diagnosed and treated in primary care as type 2 diabetes. This is because a person with LADA is not dependent on insulin (unlike classical type 1 diabetes) at the beginning of the disease, but will eventually become unable to make sufficient insulin of their own, however this is often a slow process taking an average of 2 to 6 years.
