Kidney failure comes in stages and usually occurs due to diabetes or high blood pressure. Early failure can be treated by a nephrologist in order to help save kidney function as long as possible. Later (end stage) kidney failure requires kidney transplantation or dialysis treatment. Dialysis removes extra water and waste products that the damaged kidneys can no longer remove.
