What is keratoconus and how is it treated?
Keratoconus is condition where the cornea (the outer surface layer of the eye, like the glass cover of a watch) is “cone-shaped”, instead of round, causing irregularity of the surface and diminished vision. It typically develops between the ages of 12 and 25 years. Patients with mild to moderate keratoconus can often achieve excellent vision with rigid contact lenses. In patients with more severe keratoconus, where contact lenses are not working, a corneal transplant is often successful. The success rate of corneal transplantation in patients with keratoconus is very good, with over 98% of patients gaining 20/40 vision (with correction).
