What is Joint Effusion? Monday June 5, 2006 A build-up of fluid in a joint can be among the first symptoms of arthritis. As fluid builds up, the joint becomes swollen. A small amount of fluid exists in a normal joint but an excessive amount is symptomatic and must be treated.
