I love the movies he made with director John Ford. These include “Stagecoach,” which made Duke a star, and Ford’s ‘Cavalry Trilogy’ about the US Army Cavalry on the frontier. All of John Ford’s film seem to have the same character actors, and many are great ones, like Victor McLaglen, Ward Bond, Mildred Natwick, Ben Johnson, Chill Wills, et al. The trilogy: Fort Apache (1948) Henry Fonda plays a stuck-up Eastern officer who burns with resentment at being given command of a distant, dusty, desert fort where John Wayne commands a company. Also stars Shirley Temple and her brand-new husband, John Agar. She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949) John Wayne plays an Army Colonel on the brink of retirement who sees one last chance to avert an Indian uprising and war on the frontier.
