What is Jean-Baptiste Lamarks theory for evolution?
He believed that species could work towards acquiring a certain trait, that during the life span of an animal, it’s genetic code could be changed (actually, this part of his argument is actually being supported now due to epigenetics). He believed that if a giraffe focused on increasing it’s neck’s length constantly stretched it’s neck, it’s neck would become longer, allowing it to reach the succulent laves. He also believed these changes would be passed along to the offspring. Nowadays, we know that flexing your neck to make it longer will not do so, however, his theory that genes can be changed during ones lifetime is actually very credible now. A new branch of science called epigenetics is emerging and it is based on the proteins (histones) binding to the DNA, winding it into a small enough shape to fit into the cell (it would be 8m long otherwise). However, chemicals can cause these histones too bind tighter or looser. Certain influences in your life can make them bind tighter or l
