What is Japanese Buddhism?

Hi Alannah, Japanese Buddhism is simply Buddhism as it developed in Japan since the 7th century. It was imported from Korea, who had imported it from China, and so on back to India. Buddhism in Japan has evolved quite a bit as new schools of though arise over time. The original six schools of Nara are quite small now, but schools like Shingon and Tendai have survived the test of time. However, in the 13th century, due to a variety of reasons, Buddhism in Japan had a huge upheaval and many schools arose, including: * Zen * Nichren * Pure Land (Jodo Shu and Jodo Shinshu) Among other sects. Jodo Shu and Jodo Shinshu are now the largest sects by far in Japan, but Nichiren, Zen, Shingon and Tendai all add to the mix. Japanese Buddhism is among my favorite (been a Jodo Shinshu Buddhist for a while), and the history of the schools is pretty interesting stuff if you get into it. Hope that helps!
