What is it that the majority of Americans have against socialism?
Well, when they think about it, probably nothing. Usually when Americans refer to socialism, they mean statist policies (which are arguably somewhat socialistic I guess, but don’t encompass all forms socialism). Some commentators extend the term to include other things, like government interaction in the marketplace, which is technically state capitalism. At least as far as the American media goes, there’s a (probably intentional) really poor understanding of basic political vocabulary anyway. You see self-contradictory terms like “liberal leftist” in the American media a lot.
