The weather is pretty overcaste and rainy. Then out of the lakes and onto the NW Cumbrian plain it’s pretty bleak with rather insular small villages where everyone is related to everyone else. You are an outsider here in more ways than one. As in many cut-off locations the tribe, albeit living mostly off the State, will accept no new ideas or ways. As a new arrival unless you conform to their failing ways and beliefs you will be seen as a threat and outrageously attacked in a fairly viscious manner. In a way it’s their Sport, but also based on deep-seated fear. With 9 children, it’s not for you unless you’re so laid-back and State-dependent that you want to adopt all their attitudes.
