I cannot remember exactly what ISO stands for but: It is the same as a film ISO. For example, film with 100 ISO needs more light to work than film witn a 400 ISO rating. You get sharper images with 100 ISO film though. ISO on digital cameras imitates that. Set your digital camera to 100 ISO and it will control shutter-speed and apeture size for sharper images but will require more light to do so. Set it to 400 and the apeture and shutter-speeds will be calculated for dimmer light, but the images may not be quite as sharp.
