What is Ipecac Syrup?
Ipecac syrup is a medicine that makes people vomit. It is sometimes used to help people get rid of poison they have swallowed. Always call the Poison Control Center before using Ipecac syrup They will tell you if Ipecac is needed and how much to give. Never put your fingers down someone’s throat – it can hurt them. Ipecac syrup should not be used: • when the product involved is not harmful. Call the Poison Control Center to find out if the product or plant is dangerous. • when someone has swallowed a product that burns, such as drain cleaner. If it burns going down, it will burn again when vomited. • when someone had taken medicine that makes them drowsy and faint. It is unsafe for someone to vomit when they are lying down or not alert. • when someone has swallowed an oily product, such as furniture polish or gasoline.
