What is involved in stabilizing a stone?
Stabilized stones have been treated to improve its durability, stabilize cracks, and improve the stone’s appearance (a dye is sometimes added to the stone – this is called a color shot or color stabilized). Liquid hardeners are injected into soft, porous stone at high pressures – this fills the pores in the stone. Turquoise is often stabilized.
