Information gathering includes many tasks. You will need to gather information about your property and finances. You will need information about divorce, separation, custody, child support and the legal aspects of the division of your property and debts. You will also need legal advice about how the law might apply to the facts of your situation and about likely outcomes should you decide to have a court decide the issues between you. Much of this information you can gather for yourself through an exchange of information that may take place on your own or through the mediation process and through reading about the divorce and parenting process (NVMS can give you a reading list). And, although you have a right to handle all aspects of your own legal affairs, consultation with an attorney to get legal advice is highly recommended.
