What is involved in a speech/language evaluation?
The speech-language pathologist (SLP) will gather information about the student’s communication development, academic and social performance. The student will have a hearing screening and speech/language screening in all areas including articulation/phonology, language, fluency, and voice. Upon completion of the screening, additional evaluation in any one or more areas may be necessary. In the area of articulation and phonological processing the SLP will evaluate the student’s speech sound production at the word level and in connected speech. The areas of language evaluated may include receptive and expressive language (grammar, vocabulary, comprehension), cognitive aspects of communication (memory, sequencing, problem solving) and social aspects of language. A student’s fluency may be evaluated to determine if disfluencies are present and/or the level of severity.
