What is involved in a cataract operation?
Phacoemulsification consists of shattering and vacuuming the cataract inside the eye by making a 3 mm incision and using a ultrasonic vibration-irrigation instrument. Once the cataract has been removed an intraocular lens will be inserted through the same incision that substitutes the chrystalline lens without any necessity for stitching avoiding astigmatism problems afterwards. Recuperation of sight is fast and it is possible to resume a normal life in 3 to 4 days. If the grading of the intraocular lens is calculated correctly, then hyperopia and myopia can be eliminated as well permitting the patient to have long vision without degrading or at least the degrading is reduced to a minimum.
