What is invented spelling? Is it good or bad?
Children don’t invent any spelling. Instead they demonstrate what they know about phonics as they imitate what they have seen others write. The scribbled story on a page just might be what children remember seeing while watching their parents write in cursive. As they become more experienced with writing, children learn more standard spelling patterns. Teachers write with the children every day to model the strategies used to spell a word correctly. As children learn more about how words are constructed, they become better spellers.
