What is Infrared Thermography and Predictive Maintenance ?
Thermography is the use of an infrared imaging and measurement device to “see” and measure thermal energy emitted from an object. Infrared is light which is not visible because its wavelength is too long to be detected by the human eye. It’s that part of the electromagnetic spectrum we perceive as “heat”. Infrared imaging equipment allows us to “see” and measure precisely how hot or cold an object is. Why is this important? Nearly everything gets hot before it fails. However, you can’t see heat (note the visible image of the panel below and the corresponding thermal image) and you really don’t want to put your hand on a high voltage circuit to find out. Our equipment allows us to test from a distance motors, switch controls, belts, pulleys and many other critical components of today’s industrialized economy, while they are in full operation. In the old days, you had to shut a component (or the entire factory) down for testing. Because we can predict with a great deal of accuracy, which
