What is informed consent, assent and parental permission?
Informed consent means the subject, who is 18 or over is fully informed of the details of the research in which they are to participate. For science fair projects, the basic elements of informed consent must include the following: 1) a statement of the purpose of research, a description of procedures to be followed, including identification of any experimental procedures, 2) a description of foreseeable risks or discomfort, as well as potential benefits to the subject, 3) a statement of confidentiality that the subject will not be identified, 4) statement that participation is voluntary, and 5) an explanation of whom to contact for answers to pertinent questions about the research.
