What is information accessibility?
Available is not accessible. Accessible information can be understood by people with impairments and many others, and is presented in a structure and format that makes it meaningful. It may be presented in different formats, such as Braille, large print, easy read or Sign language. Plain English (link to web site) also contributes to accessibility. An accessible website is one that is designed to be easy and satisfying to use for a range of people: • with a range of disabilities and people on the downside of the electronic divide • who, for a variety of reasons cannot access regular print • who use a variety of assistive or adaptive technologies such as computers with Braille displays • who struggle with literacy or who have English as a second language • those who live in areas with low bandwidth, use older or non-standard equipment, or whose only access to a computer is in a library, workplace, or other public situation • who use ‘new’ technologies, such as palm pilots or cell phones
