What is informal socialization?
Informal socialization usually means oral socialization. Common examples are interviews, question-and-answer sessions, and simple conversations where you’re told what’s expected of you. In a virtual internship, you’re not going to get much informal socialization. It’s rare that you will have any informal conversations with your supervisor outside of discussions about assignments, unless you ask for feedback, as we discussed in Chapter 2 and as we’ll talk about later in this chapter. If you have a face-to-face job interview before you begin your virtual internship, that’s a great chance to learn about your organization—ask plenty of questions about how the organization works and what will be expected from you as an intern. But if you don’t get an interview, that’s okay; there are plenty of other ways to become socialized to your organization.
