Independent Living is a philosophy in which you are in control of what you do, how you do it, when you do it. It is a philosophy that involves you being responsible for your care and needs and not only puts you in control but requires you to participate in directing your life and taking responsibility for your actions. The DSRP staff will help you develop your independent living skills working one to one with you and by developing activities and classes.

Independent Living prepares a child to eventually leave foster care. These skills are initially taught by the foster parents through daily activities and include things like house keeping, self-hygiene, budgeting and savings, and interpersonal and social skills. Upon reaching the age of sixteen, most children are provided more intensive Independent Living education in the form of classes taught by NECCO staff. Youth that age out of care, which in most cases the age eighteen (18), may be eligible to receive transitional living services in the form of a Bridge Home. Please contact your Case Manager for details.

Independent living is for people who want to and are able to live independently but do not want to maintain a home. Many people prefer to live in a community with others of the same age and with similar interests. An independent retirement community allows for a great deal of social activities and trips.

Independent Living is a term used in many states to define a housing option for seniors. Most commonly referred to as retirement communities, seniors reside in rental apartments, rental duplexes or rental (and owned) homes. Typically, Independent Living communities offer one meal per day along with maintenance, housekeeping and laundry services. Most independent residents require little assistance but choose Independent Living for peace of mind as staff is available to assist with emergencies 24-hours per day. Many Independent Living communities also make routine personal care assistance accessible through home health agencies.
