What is in general different having a woman as boss instead of a man?
I despair of active discrimination within the workplace. When you analyse the composition of senior management, the evidence of skewed recruitment, appointment and promotion policies is all too apparent. This has the effect of making those who inhabit the role of bosses almost completely unrepresentative of the workforce they are to manage. To break through the glass ceiling in the traditional corporation, women have to conform to male stereotypes and expectations. To make transition, the public recognition of their abilities and credentials must have become unavoidable. Laws also force some cosmetic changes. When combined, the result is either tokenism, i.e. the female boss is a cypher to shift the percentage of women in senior management to mitigate potential legal liability, or someone of spectacular ability who can become a role model to other women, i.e. they become inspirational figures because they beat the patriarchal system. The problem with the latter is that some women becom
